How I Collect

Last Updated: April 11, 2021

A few people have asked me about my collecting habits over the years, so I decided to write up a bit about how I collect. Everyone collects a bit differently - some people go for only plush, some people only go for items they like, there are many variations. I personally collect every item of every Pokémon I collect because I love having one of everything and I love full collections!

My only two exceptions to this rule are the Mijumaru line, as most people know, and now the Galarian Ponyta line. I love both of these lines so much that my rules are much less strict and I collect more items with them on it.

However, this does not mean I will collect anything and everything with Galarian Ponyta or Rapidash on it. This is a financially unsustainable approach to collecting, and not only that, it causes intense anxiety and obsessiveness about item searching (trust me, I tried a bit with Mijumaru back in the day, it almost ruined collecting for me). Therefore, I have restrictions when it comes to my collecting habits, and this extends to my Galarian Ponyta line collection.

What I will collect:

  • Items of any kind only featuring Galarian Ponyta or Galarian Rapidash.

  • Items of any kind featuring Galarian Ponyta and Galarian Rapidash together.

  • Items of any kind featuring Galarian Ponyta and/or Rapidash with their Kanto counterparts.

  • Stickers of any kind featuring Galarian Ponyta and/or Rapidash (this includes sheets and die-cut stickers).

  • All items of every Pokémon Center Collection or Ichiban Kuji Lottery featuring Galarian Ponyta and Galarian Rapidash.

  • Customizable items WITH FINITE LIMITS. (think sort of, rare contest things that give a certain amount of choices)

What I will NOT collect:

  • Galarian Ponyta or Rapidash items featuring the two with any number of other Pokémon (excluding  the above listed exceptions).

  • Products outside of Pokémon Center Collection related items that feature Galarian Ponyta or Rapidash by themselves on the inside OR back of something, i.e. not prominently displayed in plain, frontal view.

  • Most customizable items WITH INFINITE LIMITS. Or at least seemingly infinite. (Think K. Uno Jewellery and Customizable phone cases with infinite ways to design them)

Regarding K.Uno

K.Uno is a Jewellery company specializing in making jewellery related to different series, such as Disney, Kingdom Hearts, and of course, Pokémon. The jewellery is very high quality and, as such, is very expensive, thus making it a feat for a collector to assemble any sort of set they release.

I have to explain my stance on K.Uno, as even though they are of course officially licensed, it is literally impossible to collect every product of any Pokémon they can potentially release. Here's why (using Mijumaru as an example, since this affects my Mijumaru collecting moreso at the moment):

  • K.Uno has held, and probably will hold more, workshops in which you can make your own jewellery with your own engravings, Mijumaru being one of the engravings. It is impossible to really know if someone chose Mijumaru, and what piece of jewellery they had him engraved on, and if they would ever want to sell. Even then it would be RUDE to have something special someone made for themselves or a loved one on your Wants List!

  • K.Uno rings that are customizable are not even Pokemon specific, meaning most of the rings that Mijumaru can be engraved onto are able to have engravings from Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, etc. on them.

  • Furthermore, K.Uno rings have the engravings on the inside. As I've stated before, I don't collect items outside of PC collections that feature Mijumaru anywhere out of plain sight

  • To hammer home that point of how impossible it would be to gather all of the pieces of jewellery K.Uno mkes with the possibility of a Mijumaru engraving, it would cost you, at the time of writing, 6,063,200円 to get them all – put that in the currency converter and your jaw will hit the floor. This isn't even including those workshops specific pieces!

Now, this being said, I DO collect certain items K.Uno releases, which is why you see some of their items on my wants list and collection pages on my Mijumaru site. It is up for debate whether or not they are considered pieces of a collection officially based on the fact that, even though they official products, they are custom items at the end of it all, but that is a separate discussion entirely. At the moment, luckily Galarian Ponyta and Rapidash have nothing from them, and personally I do hope it stays that way, but only time will tell if they add them to their roster.

What do I mean by Pokémon Center Collection?

It should be noted that Pokémon Center Collections are also referred to as Pokémon Center Promotions, and sometimes Pokémon Center Series by other collectors. I believe when using these terms we all mean the same thing, but in any case I will explain my thoughts on what constitutes a Pokémon Center Collection.

For me, there are two main criteria that must be met:

  • First: Pokémon Center Collections are released by the Pokémon Center, and only by the Pokémon Center. None of the products are sold at any other stores otherwise I don't include it in the definition of a PC Collection.

  • Second: a Pokémon Center Collection will be a collection of items, typically stationary items, plush, keychains, etc. that all fit the same theme and have, typically, the same style of artwork. Think Christmas and Halloween items, or the more recent Pokémon Surf and Ditto Transform series!

Also, during Black & White, and before, there were also several smaller collections that fit this theme – groups of items with the same artwork. The Pokemon Center did a ton of these, not always announced, but they always had distinct artwork done mostly by Kouki Saitou (he does a ton of the artwork for many promotions, big and small). These particular collections were typically only stationary items, with no accompanying bigger items like plush or keychains. However, they are still included since they fit the two main criteria for being counted as PC Collections.

Hopefully by looking at my page you will gain an understanding of what I mean! I will document Galarian Ponyta and Rapidash's collections as they are released, so stay tuned!
